The Origin of the Brightest Cluster Galaxies

چکیده

Most clusters and groups of galaxies contain a giant elliptical galaxy in their centres which far outshines and outweighs normal ellipticals. The origin of these brightest cluster galaxies is intimately related to the collapse and formation of the cluster. Using a large cosmological N-body simulation of cluster collapse, we show how hierarchical merging naturally produces a giant, central elliptical galaxy with observed structural and kinematical properties. Subject headings: galaxies: clusters: general – galaxies: elliptical and lenticular, cD – galaxies: formation – galaxies: evolution – galaxies: interactions – galaxies: kinematics and dynamics – galaxies structure – cosmology: dark matter – cosmology: theory – methods: numerical

Spatially resolved kinematics and stellar populations of brightest cluster and group galaxies

We present an examination of the kinematics and stellar populations of a sample of 3 Brightest Group Galaxies (BGGs) and 3 Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in X-ray groups and clusters. We have obtained high signal-to-noise Gemini/GMOS (Gemini South Multi-Object Spectrograph) long-slit spectra of these galaxies and use Lick indices to determine ages, metallicities and α-element abundance ratio...

On the Precursors of Fossil Groups

We compare the absolute magnitudes in the K-band of the brightest galaxies in clusters of Bautz-Morgan type I with those of the fossil group brightest galaxies. It is found that the brightest galaxies in fossil groups are on average fainter than the brightest galaxies in clusters. It is also shown that the brightness of the brightest galaxy depends on the cluster richness. It is concluded that ...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

One of the most vital observational clues for unraveling the origin of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG) is the observed alignment of the BCGs with their host cluster and its surroundings. We have examined the BCG-cluster alignment effect, using clusters of galaxies detected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the BCGs are preferentially aligned with the principal axis of thei...

The Non-Parametric Model for Linking Galaxy Luminosity with Halo/Subhalo Mass: Are First Brightest Galaxies Special?

We revisit the longstanding question of whether first brightest cluster galaxies are statistically drawn from the same distribution as other cluster galaxies or are “special”, using the new non-parametric, empirically based, model presented in Vale & Ostriker (2006) for associating galaxy luminosity with halo/subhalo masses. We introduce scatter in galaxy luminosity at fixed halo mass into this...
